| Some Helpful Information On Boat Hulls and Design:
Beam. This is one of your most important measurements. It will not only indicate how much real room you have below, but will affect the comfort and performance of your boat. Generally, beamier boats are more comfortable, but are also harder to push through the water.
Draft. Where will you go boating? Know the depth of the water at low tide where you will be using your boat.
Deadrise/transom. This refers to the degrees from the horizontal your hull shape is from a flat plane, ie 0-degrees. A “Deep-V” pioneered by Ray Hunt, the Bertram 30, and Cigarettes of the Don Aronow era were generally 24-degrees. That is about as deep as they get. Generally, the deeper the “V” the better the ride at high speed – but it also takes more power to push the boat through the water. 11-degrees is generally considered to be a fairly “flat” deadrise. A boat with this low deadrise will go faster with equivalent power, but will also ride much rougher in choppy conditions. Decide where and when you will use your boat and pick the deadrise accordingly. | |
